Do We Read Enough Anymore?

In an age of short videos and endless scrolling, finding time for books and long-form reading is becoming increasingly difficult.

Do We Read Enough Anymore?

There was a time when sitting down with a book was an ordinary part of everyday life. People read newspapers over breakfast, carried novels during journeys and spent evenings turning pages without constantly checking a screen.

Today, our attention is being pulled in a hundred different directions.

A few minutes of free time can quickly become half an hour of scrolling. One short video becomes another, then another. News arrives through notifications, conversations happen through messages, and information is increasingly consumed in small pieces.

The question is not whether people are consuming information. We certainly are.

The question is: are we still taking enough time to read deeply?

Reading Is More Than Information

Reading a long article or a book requires something that social media rarely demands from us: patience.

A book does not usually give us everything in ten seconds. We have to stay with an idea, follow an argument and sometimes sit with something we do not immediately understand.

That process can be valuable.

Long-form reading can expose us to unfamiliar ideas and perspectives. It can also encourage us to think beyond headlines and quick conclusions.

The Phone Is Not the Enemy

It would be easy to blame smartphones and social media for the decline of reading habits. But technology itself is not necessarily the problem.

The same phone that provides endless distractions can also contain thousands of books, newspapers, research papers and educational resources.

The difference often comes down to how we choose to use it.

A person can spend an hour scrolling through short videos or spend the same hour reading an essay, exploring a subject or finishing a few chapters of a book.

Perhaps We Don’t Need to Read More

Maybe the goal should not be to read hundreds of books every year or completely abandon social media.

Perhaps it is simply about creating some space for slower forms of thinking.

Ten pages before going to sleep. A newspaper article with breakfast. An essay during a commute. A book on the weekend.

Small habits can eventually become meaningful ones.

In a world that constantly asks us to move faster, reading may simply be one of the few activities that reminds us to slow down.

And perhaps that is exactly why we still need it.
